Freelance photographer Jas needed a reliable system to organise and display her diverse portfolio – spanning news, portrait, documentary and music – online.
Jas already had a visual identity for her business cards (the blue and white text on a dark background) and wanted to use this on the new website. A completely black background made the contrast between the images and the backdrop a bit too intense, so we experimented with varying shades of gray to soften the impact on the eye. We designed a grid that gave as much room as possible for image display while ensuring the page fitted the majority of screen resolutions.
A few months down the line we swapped the black background for clean white. I also modified the home page to display fullscreen images that automatically scaled to the visitor’s screen size.
Using the open source gallery software Zenphoto, with its user-friendly admin interface, we enabled Jas to quickly and easily upload fresh work onto her website.
Weddings
About a year after the initial launch, Jas requested a separate gallery to promote her wedding photography services. I created a simple, fast-loading page with scrolling images and a striking pop-out banner with a contact form and testimonials from happy customers.
