Hand and Lock Embroidery

strangerpixel approached Hand & Lock in February 2007 with a proposal to redevelop their website. The brief was broadly as follows:

  • To incorporate the previously disparate elements of the Hand & Lock web environment within a coherent visual design.
  • To build a website around a content management system (CMS) that allowed the company more efficient control over their content.
  • To enhance both the speed and accessibility of the website by replacing the old table-based design with hand-coded XHTML and CSS.

Many months’ work have produced a site that is fresher, cleaner and easier to maintain than its predecessor. The site has the following features:

  • A CMS that allows easy uploading of news information and the creation of a hierarchical page structure across clearly defined navigational sections.
  • A gallery of embroidery products containing hundreds of images, all of which are uploaded and maintained via a simple, user-friendly web interface.
  • Integrated Google search.
  • An Actinic e-commerce system. Actinic was in use on the previous website; this project gave the shop a new theme in line with the main site design.
  • Contact forms for feedback and signing up to the company mailing list.

You Touched Me

MA Fashion student Walter Buchholz had a day to create a website for his You Touched Me clothing project. strangerpixel had some basic pages up overnight, and went on to create an image gallery that allowed browsers to leave comments on individual images. The project was a success, and the proceeds of Walter’s charity auction were given to a Romanian charity.

“Alastair helped me out of a tight spot by designing and building a website in less than 24 hours. Everyone I spoke to said it would be very expensive and take up to three days. Alastair understood very quickly the look was I was after and almost immediately came up with the design. I know that I will keep on working with Alastair, we were really ‘cooking with gas’ with the initial site. I feel we are on the same wavelength and look forward to extending the website with him.”Walter Buchholz, You Touched Me

London-based start-up Vertigo wanted to create a web presence quickly to coincide with their print marketing efforts. strangerpixel responded with a smart, lively design that used a simple navigational tool to foreground the Vertigo branding.

“Strangerpixel were quick to respond to our request and quick to grasp precisely what we required. We’re delighted with the result which is clean and crisp, modern and enticing. Exactly what we needed!” Jenny Boyce, Vertigo Communications

Darbucka needed a website in a hurry for their fledgling gallery in Clerkenwell, London. strangerpixel put a basic holding page up overnight, and in 3 weeks produced a complete design and build in HTML and CSS. The site has a gallery to showcase artists’ work and feedback and sign-up forms for visitors to get in contact.

“Alastair designed our website according to our needs and took time in the consultation process to get it right. Adding a mailing list function has improved our marketing. We have also noticed that we get more hits since his redesign. Our customers have commented on our site, they like the simplicity and ease of use.”

Natalya Critchley

A visual artist from Venezuela, Natalya Critchley wanted a web presence to publicise her London gallery showing in June 2006. strangerpixel offered an initially basic site consisting of a home page and some information on the exhibition. The site has since been expanded to incorporate an image gallery that depicts Natalya’s career and artistic development ‘from a to b‘.
