Charlie Campbell Photography

Portrait photographer Charlie Campbell had a very clear initial vision for the design of her portfolio website. Together we developed her creative ideas into a website to organise and display her expanding range of portraits, documentary work and personal projects.

The visual design of the main image page came together fairly quickly, followed by the basic page structure of gallery menu / albums / contact page. Later, a 'splash' page was added as a skin to the website. Speed of image loading was identified as a key priority, so the gallery was built in such a way as to preload a set of images before allowing rapid browsing between them. Charlie initially wanted a 'carousel-style' system for browsing thumbnails, but ended up opting instead for a separate thumbnail 'tab' to enable a visitor to select from the full set being browsed.

The finished project has the following features:

  • A fully editable image gallery for Charlie to store, organise and display her professional portfolio. Charlie has the ability to customise the position of all the images on the site.
  • An easy-to-use image content management system that will allow considerable expansion over time as more projects are added.
  • An editable contact page that will allow the addition of further information if necessary.

Technical features:

  • Gallery built using the open-source gallery software Zenphoto, alongside the CMS extension ZenPage.
  • Rapid image browsing, navigation and pagination engineered using the jQuery Galleria script.
  • Tab structure and other load and fade effects created with jQuery.
  • Custom cursor effect using qTip.
  • Custom CSS/HTML theme with elements of the Blueprint CSS library.
Al and myself started off with a couple of ideas from which we tailored the site to deliver exactly what I wanted which was a simple yet strong design and one that operated quickly. And a site that could be self-sufficient and easy for me to update with new material. Al got what I was talking about and came up with great ideas, as well as being very patient and accommodating with my various changes in direction – I’m thrilled with the end-result.Charlie Campbell
